Predawn Relay Runner Reaching for Baton in by a riverbank near Varna

Predawn Relay Runner Reaching for Baton

by Monique Dillon

Late spring predawn darkness wraps the riverbank near Varna in deep indigo shadows. A relay runner stretches their arm backward into the empty air, fingers splayed to catch the incoming baton. Faint ground glow from the distant city illuminates the curve of the athlete's back and the tension in their extended muscles. Sea spray hangs suspended in the cool air, catching the starlight as tiny, glittering specks against the dark track surface. The runner's focused expression is barely visible, defined only by the subtle highlights on their cheekbone and the shadow of their nose. Their legs are planted firmly on the damp asphalt, the white lane marking cutting sharply across the frame to the right of their outstretched hand.
