Pre-dawn Oaxaca street vendor preparing onions with twine wrapped pottery near colonial church

by Cheryl Cameron

Before dawn light filters over the tiled roofs of Oaxaca, a street vendor sits on a low wooden stool beside a white stucco church wall. A large clay pitcher with twine fibers braided around its handle rests on the ground next to him. Beside the pitcher, a woven basket holds several raw onions, their papery skins catching the faint blue morning light. The vendor’s hands, marked with smudges from the night’s work, move quickly as he sorts the produce. In the background, the silhouette of a distant mountain range fades into the mist, while the quiet street remains empty of traffic.
