Pouring Tea in Osaka

by Suzanne Padilla

Under the bruised purple sky of a Namba alley, a street vendor’s stall glows with the harsh fluorescence of a single overhead tube light. Rain slicks the asphalt, reflecting the red neon of a nearby pachinko parlor in long, distorted streaks. The vendor, wearing a blue plastic apron, holds a metal teapot, pouring steaming broth into a paper cup for a customer huddled under a clear umbrella. Beside the cooking station, a cluster of ceramic egg cups sits empty on the counter, waiting for the next order. A small, wet dog shakes itself off near the vendor’s legs, sending droplets flying into the puddles.
