Porcelain at First Light in in Palermo, Italy

Porcelain at First Light

by Camille Holden

First light falls through the damp, heavy air of a narrow Palermo alley, illuminating a vendor’s cart where cracked painted stucco walls reflect the soft gray sky. A wooden crate overflows with bright orange peaches, their skins glistening with raindrops that catch the weak morning sun. Beside them, a few pieces of blue and white porcelain rest on a wet newspaper, the glaze mirroring the puddles on the cobblestones.
