Midday Light on Ceramics

Under the flat, diffuse light of an overcast midday, a narrow street in Palermo reveals a vibrant display of local commerce. A vendor’s wooden cart, scarred by years of use, holds a woven basket brimming with rough, earth-toned garlic bulbs, their papery skins catching the soft gray light. Beside them, a clear glass pitcher filled with water reflects the muted sky, its surface rippled by recent movement. A pair of metal kitchen tongs rests casually across the rim, while a colorful ceramic tile, typical of Sicilian majolica patterns, leans against the cart’s side, adding a splash of cobalt and yellow to the otherwise muted palette.
