Plastic Basins in Beijing

by Reed Perry

Warm late afternoon light floods a narrow Beijing hutong alley, illuminating a cluster of bright red plastic basins stacked against a weathered grey brick wall. The basins, some containing wet towels and others holding fresh garlic bulbs, catch the low-angle sun which creates sharp, high-contrast reflections on their curved surfaces. Behind the foreground stack, a traditional wooden lattice window frames a glimpse of a neighbor's courtyard, adding depth to the intimate urban space. One dried chili pepper hangs from the rim of the top basin, its wrinkled skin glowing with translucent orange light against the deep shadow of the alley.
