Peeling Fruit in Shanghai

A narrow alleyway in Shanghai glows under the harsh pink and blue spill of neon signage reflecting off wet asphalt. An elderly vendor sits behind a makeshift cart, peeling a tangerine with small pruning shears, the orange peel curling onto a stained metal tray beside a stack of paperbacks. The golden reflection of a distant streetlight catches the rim of a chipped ceramic bowl, against the sleek plastic of a nearby storage tin. A orange cat sleeps curled on a stack of cardboard boxes, indifferent to the passing commuters whose legs blur in the background.
