Patternmaker Cutting Muslin Neon Arcade Night

Low tungsten light from a high window spills across a large studio table where a patternmaker works on thick muslin. The fabric spreads in pale folds under the warm glow, against the cool, electric blue and pink neon signs from the arcade visible through the glass behind. Early winter darkness presses against the window frame, while a soft haze of hairspray hangs in the air, diffusing the light beams into visible ribbons. The subject stands at the very edge of the composition, poised with a cutting tool, their silhouette sharp against the patterned paper weights and scattered pins. The steel ruler rests on the fabric, its edge catching the ambient city light.
