Dim indigo light falls through high warehouse windows, mixing with the warm, yellow glow of overhead interior lamps to illuminate a concrete floor streaked with rainwater. A metal pallet jack sits idle beside a towering stack of brown cardboard cartons, their surfaces marked with shipping tape and faded ink. The scene extends deep into the cross-dock lane, where rows of similar packages create layers of receding depth. Shadows stretch long and soft across the wet ground, cast by the industrial fixtures overhead. Dust motes hang suspended in the shafts of artificial light, against the cool blue twilight visible at the far end of the bay. One reflection of a red safety light glints off a puddle near the jack's wheel.
