Newspaper Boy in Suzhou Blue Hour
by Milo Daniel
Cool blue twilight washes over a busy Suzhou corner as electric streetlamps begin to cast a warm, amber glow against the deepening sky. A young boy stands near the curb, holding a stack of newspapers close to his chest, his face illuminated by the soft radiance of nearby signage. Late summer leaves skitter across the wet pavement, caught in sudden gusts of wind that ripple the air. Behind him, the blurred shapes of pedestrians and vehicles create a rhythmic flow of motion. The boy wears a simple cotton shirt, slightly damp from the humid evening. A red lantern hangs from a wooden post nearby, its light reflecting in the small puddles at his feet. The concrete sidewalk shows cracks filled with fallen leaves, at the base of the moment in the quiet urgency of the city.
