Behind him, the wrought-iron balconies of a historic building rise into the fog, their intricate scrollwork softened by the moisture in the air. Puddles gather in the cracks of the worn limestone pavers, mirroring the yellow warning tape cordoning off a nearby utility access point. A discarded plastic coffee cup sits precariously on the edge of a storm drain, its white surface stark against the wet, dark stone.
