Nebuta Festival Floats in San Diego Street

by Cynthia Summers

Heavy gray clouds hang low over a San Diego street where massive illuminated Nebuta floats stand in a procession line. From behind, the towering paper and wood structures dominate the view, their intricate painted designs glowing softly against the flat midday light. Dancers in traditional happi coats move between the giants, their faces set in expressions of fierce determination. The pavement reflects the dull overhead brightness, while the intricate paper lanterns cast faint shadows on the wet ground. Tall buildings frame the procession on either side, creating a narrow corridor for the moving art. The sheer scale of the floats dwarfs the surrounding crowd, showing the physical weight of the cultural display.
