Nara Tea Ceremony Staircase Under Night Projector
by Dwight Booth
Deep indigo walls absorb the darkness of late autumn night inside a Nara tearoom, illuminated only by a harsh projector beam cutting across the room. A traditional wooden trestle table holds polished ceramic vessels and a bamboo whisk, resting on tatami mats with crisp, clean edges. The impossible geometry dominates the corner where a single wooden landing supports two staircases: one ascending toward the ceiling and another descending into the floor, both constructed from the same polished timber. The projector light highlights the dust motes and the grain of the wood while casting sharp, geometric shadows that defy gravity. The scene remains still, preserving the quiet anticipation of a ceremony before guests arrive, with the dual staircase creating a rigid, impossible axis in the center of the space.
