Misty dawn in Cape Town softens the rugged granite of Signal Hill, where a municipal worker in a high-visibility vest pauses beside a weathered municipal truck. The thick fog rests on the wet asphalt, blurring the distant skyline of the City Bowl into a pale gray wash. The worker holds a heavy-duty dustpan and a stiff-bristled broom, resting them against the truck’s rear bumper while sipping from a chipped enamel mug. Steam rises faintly from the mug, competing with the cold air. A cluster of bright red geraniums in a rusted planter box on the sidewalk provides a sharp, vibrant contrast to the monochrome mist and the dull gray of the truck’s paint.
