Muddy Boot Prints on Sow Card Rail at Night

Cold moonlight washes over a weathered metal card rail running along a muddy paddock fence in Lombardy. Deep boot prints press into the wet earth beside the structure, their edges softened by scattered straw that rests on the ground. Rinse water pools in shallow depressions, reflecting the pale sky without a hint of nostalgia. The dry season leaves the soil hard yet slick with recent rain, while the clearing storm leaves the air still. Rust streaks the metal surface, against the dark, churned mud. One strip of straw rests against the base of the rail, caught in the shadow of the fence post.
