Morning Tea in Kathmandu

A tea seller balances a large aluminum kettle on a small charcoal stove in a narrow Kathmandu alley, steam rising into the cool, grey morning air. The low sun casts long, sharp shadows across the faded red brick of the adjacent wall, where tangled bougainvillea spills over a crumbling concrete ledge. The seller, wrapped in a thick wool shawl, pours dark tea into small glass cups arranged on a worn wooden tray. Nearby, a pair of faded oven mitts rests on a stack of clay tiles, their fabric stained with soot. A few pigeons peck at crumbs near the seller’s feet, undisturbed by the rhythmic pouring.
