Mending Clothes in Boston

Sunlight cuts sharply through the heavy fog of a Boston Common bus shelter, illuminating a woman in a thick wool coat waiting on a metal bench. Her knees are drawn up, resting a worn leather mending basket on her lap as she carefully threads a needle through a tear in her own sleeve. The basket is open, revealing spools of thread and a pair of scissors, while her other hand holds a stopwatch, its digital face glowing faintly in the shadow. Behind her, the blurred motion of a green line train passes on the elevated track, its steel wheels clattering against the rails.
