Measuring Corn in Mexico City

by Darryl McGee

A street vendor in Polanco adjusts a faded blue tarp against the encroaching twilight, the blue hour casting a cool, uniform light over the busy sidewalk. His hands, stained with chilies, grip a wooden ruler to measure a portion of street corn, while a metal wine opener rests loosely in his belt loop, a relic from a different trade. Beside him, a stack of breadboxes serves as a makeshift shelf for condiments, their painted surfaces reflecting the neon glow of a nearby convenience store sign. A scarf drapes over the edge of the cart, catching the faint wind, while peg rails on the back hold plastic bags ready for customers.
