Marathon Runner Stretching Under Streetlamp Dawn
by Marilyn Pope
Rain slicks the asphalt near the São Paulo riverbank as a marathon runner crouches in a deep, uniform shadow. The sky holds a pale, pre-dawn gray, and early spring leaves on the distant trees appear damp and dark. One streetlamp casts a harsh, impossible circle of blinding white light directly onto the runner's raised hand. This isolated brightness makes the skin appear almost glowing against the surrounding gloom, creating a stark visual disconnect from the rest of the scene. Raindrops freeze in the air within the light circle, while the rest of the runner's body remains swallowed by the heavy, flat darkness. The ground reflects the shadow's depth, except for the bright patch where the hand touches the wet pavement. A reflection of the lamp's bulb shimmers in a puddle right at the edge of the illuminated zone.
