Flat noon light flattens the shadows on a dusty, unpaved yard in a Johannesburg township, where a man in a faded blue shirt stands beside a rusted corrugated iron wall. He holds a wooden dibber in one hand and rests the other on a cluster of terracotta pots arranged on a low concrete block. The harsh light bleaches the color from the surrounding structures, showing the rough texture of the clay against the smooth, dry earth. One broad leaf from a nearby plant catches a tiny, sharp glint of moisture, against the arid surroundings. In the background, a blue and white porcelain plate sits precariously on a wire rack, its pattern vivid against the gray metal.
