First light after rain washes the zócalo in Oaxaca, turning the stone plaza into a mirror of the sky and the vibrant yellow facade of the cathedral. A street vendor, her face partially obscured by a wide-brimmed straw hat, leans over a wooden cart, arranging bright blue and orange majolica plates that gleam with wet reflections. The plates are stacked with practiced precision, their glossy surfaces catching the diffuse, gray-white light. Behind her, the wet pavement stretches toward the distant, rain-slicked spires, while a few pedestrians with umbrellas blur into the background.
