Mail Cage Route Sacks Blue Hour Dispatch
by Paxton Swain
Blue twilight falls through the high windows of a dispatch office above the Marrakech dock, casting cool reflections across the metal surfaces of a heavy mail cage. Inside, canvas route sacks in earthy ochres and deep indigos are stacked against the floor rail, their numbered seals glowing under the harsh overhead neon. The wheel locks grip the concrete floor, anchoring the cage during the inventory process. Workers in light jackets move between shelves of tracking manifests, their hands adjusting tags on the sacks. Neon strips on the ceiling mirror off the polished steel bars of the cage, creating a grid of electric blue and white highlights against the warm terracotta tones of the office walls. A metal clipboard rests on a nearby counter, its paper illuminated by the flickering overhead lights.
