Kutch Mirror Artisan in Sheung Wan Shrine in in a shrine lined with lanterns in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Kutch Mirror Artisan in Sheung Wan Shrine

by Rose Stuart

Molten sunset light spills through heavy monsoon clouds, striking the side of a shrine in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong. An artisan sits cross-legged on a woven mat, hands moving with precision as they stitch small mirrors into intricate Kutch embroidery. Rows of paper lanterns hang from the wooden ceiling, their surfaces glowing faintly in the dimming, overcast afternoon. The fabric displays dense, metallic patterns that catch the golden beam, creating sharp points of reflected light against the muted earth tones of the room. Dust particles float in the slanted rays, illuminating the texture of the thread and the rough grain of the shrine's wooden pillars. One mirror on the edge of the work reflects a patch of grey sky.
