Under the sodium-orange spill of a streetlamp in Palermo, a ceramic sink strainer rests in a stainless steel basin, catching the reflection of a neon sign from a nearby bar. Behind it, a pair of faded oven mitts hangs from a rusted hook, their fabric worn thin by use. The scene is set in a cramped kitchen corner, where a single accordion lies on a wooden table, its bellows slightly open. A salt shaker sits next to a stack of cookbooks, their pages stained with oil. The light from outside casts long, distorted shadows across the tiled floor, highlighting the texture of the grout and the sheen of the metal fixtures.
