Irrigation Gates Watering Barley Field in across a harvested grain field in Rhode Island

Irrigation Gates Watering Barley Field

by Leo Cabrera

Heavy steel irrigation gates stand low against the ground, releasing steady streams of water across a harvested grain field in Rhode Island. Late autumn rain falls in a fine, continuous sheet, turning the dark soil into a slick, reflective surface. Bright midmorning light cuts through the gray sky, creating hard coastal glare that sparkles on the wet metal and the muddy ruts. The remaining barley stubble stands short and brown, against the deep, saturated earth. Water flows in clear ribbons, pooling in the furrows before disappearing into the thirsty ground. Raindrops create tiny craters in the puddles near the gate edges. One metal hinge catches the harsh sunlight, gleaming white against the rusted iron frame.
