Hot Bread in Halifax

by Yusuf Burt

Dawn light spills over the grey Atlantic fog, catching the wet cobblestones of a Halifax wharf where a baker in a heavy wool coat lifts a steaming tray of kelp bread from a cast-iron oven. The heat warps the cold air, blurring the sharp edges of rusted mooring cleats bolted to the granite quay. Beside the oven, a chipped enamel pin tin sits open, revealing scattered thumbtacks that glint like wet pearls against the dark metal. In the background, the skeletal silhouette of a historic shipyard crane cuts through the pale morning sky, while a pair of scuffed metal stools rest empty near the doorway, their surfaces slick with sea spray and early mist.
