Hong Kong Street Scene Under Noon Sun with Bougainvillea and Clay Pots

by Cory McFarland

A narrow alley in Hong Kong is lit by the harsh, flat glare of midday sun, casting sharp, dark shadows against the peeling paint of a weathered tenement wall. A vibrant cluster of magenta bougainvillea spills over a rusted metal railing, its papery petals glowing brightly against the grey concrete. Below, several terracotta clay pots sit on a cracked stone ledge, holding small, struggling green plants that reach toward the limited light. A simple wooden camp stool rests near the entrance of a shop, its legs worn smooth by years of use. The dense, vertical nature of the neighborhood, where nature and urban decay coexist in a tight, lived-in space.
