Arranging Herbs in Hong Kong

by Caitlin Lyons

Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a narrow alleyway in Mong Kok reveals a dense vertical stack of weathered aluminum window guards and faded red brick. A young woman in a translucent yellow raincoat leans against a rusted iron gate, adjusting a blue and white porcelain bowl filled with cut chrysanthemums and medicinal herbs. The bowl sits precariously on a makeshift shelf formed by stacked milk crates, its glossy glaze reflecting the dull sky. Behind her, tangled laundry lines crisscross the narrow gap between buildings, dripping with moisture. A pair of orange rubber gloves hangs from a hook nearby, unused.
