Honey Light Turn-Down Cart in Quito Lobby Staircase
by Ryan Kramer
Amber sunset light floods the polished marble floor of a Quito hotel lobby, illuminating a brass turn-down cart positioned centrally in the room. The cart holds crisp white linens and folded towels without any decorative filler. Behind the cart, a stone staircase defies physics; a single landing branches into two staircases that ascend and descend simultaneously from the exact same point. The impossible structure casts sharp, coherent shadows that align perfectly with the honey-colored window light. Muted reflections of the brass rails and the dual staircases stretch across the dry-season floor. A wooden doorway frame surrounds the entire view, creating a frame within a frame that isolates the surreal architecture against the warm interior glow. at the edge is the sharp edge of the lower stair tread reflecting the light from the upper flight.
