Hardware Aisle in Philadelphia

Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday in Philadelphia, a cramped hardware aisle on South Street is packed with utilitarian clutter. A faded blue and white porcelain mug sits precariously on a shelf lined with oxidized copper fittings, next to a tea tin labeled with faded Philadelphia typography. Peeling turquoise paint flakes from a nearby utility cabinet, revealing layers of older gray primer and rusted steel. A pair of yellow measuring tapes dangles from a pegboard hook, their plastic casings scuffed from daily use. In the foreground, a worker’s apron, stained with grease and plaster dust, hangs loosely over a stack of muffin tins repurposed for holding small nails and screws.
