The sun drops toward the horizon over Kaohsiung’s industrial waterfront, casting long shadows across the wet pavement of a busy overpass interchange glowing with red taillights after rain. In the mid-ground, a research vessel with a prominent A-frame at the stern rests at the dock, its metal structure reflecting the fading light. The harbor water below is dark and oily, mirroring the distant drawbridge counterweight tower and the streaks of vehicle traffic above.
