Hanging Towel in San Francisco

by Brock Atkinson

Rain-slicked Mission District sidewalk reflects the soft, diffused first light of dawn, turning the asphalt into a mirror for the pastel stucco walls of a corner bodega. A chain-link fence runs along the base, its metal links heavy with water droplets that catch the ambient glow. Behind the fence, a cluster of colorful plastic crates holds discarded produce, their wet surfaces gleaming under the overcast sky. One, faded red towel hangs from a makeshift line strung between a lamppost and a brick chimney, dripping steadily onto the pavement below.
