A flat, diffuse noon light washes over a steep San Francisco sidewalk where a wrought-iron boot scraper stands anchored in the concrete near a building entrance. The stucco facade behind it shows cracked paint in pale blue and cream, revealing layers of history under the unflattering overhead sun. A few raincoats hang damp and heavy on a nearby rack, their synthetic fabric reflecting the gray sky. The street slopes sharply away, revealing a glimpse of a Victorian bay window and a parked car with a water ring on its hood. The specific texture of urban life in this hilly city, where wet gear meets dry architecture.
