Gray Cheese Stacks Red Sphere La Paz Market
by Vera Delgado
Gray stacks of round cheeses rise in uneven towers beneath a heavy canvas canopy in La Paz. Damp surfaces glisten under the dim glow of a tungsten window light, reflecting the predawn darkness that fills the market stall. Every object exists in shades of slate and charcoal, from the rough texture of the awnings to the smooth rinds of the dairy wheels. Resting atop the highest stack sits a sphere of vivid, saturated crimson. This red orb stands out sharply against the monochrome surroundings, its color appearing as dense and solid as the stone floor beneath it. The vendor's hands hover near the gray wheels, their movements frozen in the low light, while the crimson object remains the only source of intense hue in the entire frame. A drop of moisture slides down the side of the red sphere, catching the weak light before falling onto the gray wood below.
