Grandfather Reading to Child in Jhansi Library
by Archer Small
Broad late-afternoon skylight floods the pale walls of a Jhansi library reading room, casting deep shadows where the dry season air settles. An elderly man sits at the edge of the frame, his weathered hands turning the pages of a thick book held by a young child on his lap. The child, dressed in light cotton suitable for the heat, leans forward with intense focus. Lamplight begins to accumulate in the far corners of the high-ceilinged room, creating pools of warm yellow against the cooling natural blue. Dust motes float in the shafts of light hitting the worn wooden floorboards. The grandfather's face is etched with concentration, illuminated by the stark contrast between the bright window and the dimming interior. A stack of leather-bound books rests on the table beside them, their spines faded by years of use.
