Graffiti Over Old Mural at Christchurch Tram Stop

by Andrew Snyder

Rough concrete blocks form the base of a tram shelter wall where an older mural peeks through a fresh coat of spray paint. The original artwork, featuring faded geometric shapes in ochre and slate blue, is partially obscured by jagged new tags in neon green and black. Late morning light strikes the wall from the side, casting sharp shadows that define the texture of the peeling paint and the rough stucco. The sky above remains a heavy, uniform gray, diffusing the sun and flattening the colors of the street scene. A metal bench sits empty to the left, its surface wet with recent rain, reflecting the dull light. The new graffiti drips slightly down the wall, creating a dark, glossy line that contrasts with the matte finish of the old mural beneath it.
