Glass Biltong and Droëwors in Chongqing
by Austin Baird
Copper-toned light spills across a rustic wooden table in a Chongqing room, illuminating a wooden tray holding strips of biltong and coils of droëwors. The meat retains its deep reddish-brown and cured hues, yet one large coil of droëwors is entirely transparent like solid glass, revealing the internal muscle fibers and fat marbling suspended within its clear shell. Warm candlelight glows from the corner, casting soft reflections on the glassy meat and the polished wood grain. Heavy winter coats hang in the background, suggesting a cold season outside, while the translucent coil catches the ambient glow, showing no refraction distortion beyond its glass-like clarity. The tray sits firmly on the table, its contents arranged for a celebration, with the impossible object resting beside the solid, opaque strips of cured meat.
