First light falls through the canopy of a kapok tree with prominent buttress roots, casting long shadows across the paved street in Luang Prabang. A line of saffron-robed Buddhist monks walks silently down the center of the road, their bare feet touching the cool morning ground. Local residents in traditional attire sit on the curb, placing sticky rice and small portions of food into the alms bowls held by the monks. The scene is quiet and respectful, with the soft glow of dawn illuminating the red lacquered wood of a nearby temple gate in the background. The air is still, showing the daily ritual that defines this historic city in Laos.
