Gardener at Noon Light in Bergen
by Julian Sims
A narrow, sloping cobblestone alley in Bergen’s Bryggen district is flanked by tall, weathered Hanseatic timber warehouses painted in faded reds and yellows. The winter noon light is flat and diffuse, casting soft, indistinct shadows across the wet stone. In the mid-ground, a local gardener in a thick wool coat tends to a small patch of resilient greenery near a drainage grate, his hands gloved against the cold. Nearby, a shop window displays a single cleaver and a bread knife resting on a wooden block, visible through the glass but secondary to the street life. The quiet, damp reality of a Norwegian winter day, with the texture of old wood contrasting against the slick, rain-slicked pavement.
