Wet Alley in Bergen
by Jean Cooper
A narrow alleyway in Bergen’s Bryggen district glistens under the sodium orange of streetlamps, reflecting the wet cobblestones slick from evening rain. A rusted bicycle leans against a weathered wooden wall, its handlebars tangled with a coiled black garden hose ending in a brass nozzle, while a yellow umbrella stand nearby holds a dripping black umbrella. Above, peg rails mounted on the dark timber frame cast long, distorted shadows across the damp pavement, illuminated by the cool blue spill from a nearby shop window. The gritty, lived-in texture of the harbor edge, where utilitarian tools rest casually against historic architecture, blending the functional debris of daily life with the atmospheric glow of the Norwegian night.
