A sun-bleached sandstone tenement wall in Edinburgh’s New Town shows deep pitting from centuries of wind, contrasting with a modern, glossy white uPVC window frame. Below, a narrow service alley is cluttered with domestic detritus: a faded floral cushion cover leans against a damp brick pillar, while a pair of rusted garden shears rests on a discarded plastic crate. A white ceramic mug sits precariously on the edge of a stone sink, its rim scratched from years of use. A ginger cat stretches lazily across the sun-warmed paving stones, ignoring the scattered tools. The flat noon light washes out color but highlights the texture of the weathered stone and the smooth, artificial surfaces of the renovation materials.
