Fossil Needle Reveals Enamel in Twilight Lab

by Ariana Suarez

Indigo twilight falls through a high window, casting cool blue tones across a sterile white workbench. Fine chalky dust hangs suspended in narrow shafts of artificial light from overhead lamps. A slender metal needle tip presses against a rough, beige stone fragment, scraping away the powdery matrix to expose the glossy, pearly white curve of tooth enamel. The contrast between the fragile mineral crust and the sharp, dark metal tool is stark. Tiny particles of sediment drift in the dim air, illuminated by the warm glow of the desk lamp. The needle rests at a precise angle, holding a microscopic sliver of extracted material. One fleck of white dust rests on the edge of the exposed enamel.
