A damp concrete step in a Christchurch residential alley glistens under the flat, diffuse light of a winter noon, reflecting the grey sky. A discarded, rusted nail brush lies abandoned near a drainage grate, its bristles matted with mud and grey wool. Beside it, a small cluster of dried, brown flax leaves—harakeke—sticks up from a crack in the pavement, against the smooth, wet stone. In the background, a weathered corrugated iron fence, painted a faded, peeling white, runs along the boundary of a property, its surface textured with years of rain stains.
