Fitting Room Curtain and Mirrored Reflections in Atelier
by Elena Mann
Late summer night light falls through a high window, illuminating dust motes above a heavy velvet curtain pulled slightly aside. The fabric hangs in deep folds of midnight blue, its texture rough against the smooth, cool surface of a full-length mirror behind it. Reflected in the glass, the edge of a tailored garment rests on a hanger, catching the warm spill of runway lights from the unseen stage. A soft glow from backstage equipment washes over the floor, revealing scuff marks on the concrete and the faint outline of a wooden frame. The mirror shows a distorted angle of the room, showing a glimpse of a hanging garment rack and the shadow of a doorframe against the far wall. The curtain's hem rests on a thin layer of dust near the baseboard, while the reflection shows the sharp edge of a metal hook against the dark glass.
