Fire Dancer Spinning Poi on Auckland Beach
by Pearl Bishop
Copper-toned twilight washes over a concrete canal bank in Auckland where a fire dancer spins two glowing poi balls. The performer wears dark, heavy winter clothing against the cold air. Bright orange flames trail in wide, circular arcs, cutting through the low-hanging gray clouds that obscure the sky. The firelight casts a warm, flickering glow on the wet pavement and the dancer's focused expression. Sparks occasionally drift upward, vanishing into the damp atmosphere. Behind the figure, the still water of the canal reflects the orange flames and the dark, overcast sky. A thin wisp of smoke rises from the burning fuel, blending with the misty air. at the edge is the sharp, glowing ring of fire hovering just inches above the damp concrete edge.
