A low stone ledge runs along the foreground, at the base of the animal in a lived-in space rather than a studio. To the right, the edge of a leafy shrub intrudes into the frame, adding depth and a touch of wild greenery against the plain masonry. The scene is lit by the even, diffused light of a heavy overcast sky, which eliminates harsh shadows and emphasizes the natural tones of the fur and the aged surface of the wall.
