Mist rests on the granite quayside of Halifax’s historic waterfront, softening the sharp edges of the red-brick warehouses that line the harbor. A weathered wooden dock piling, scarred by decades of tide and rope, stands in the foreground, its surface slick with condensation. Draped loosely over a cleat is a frayed blue net, the only vibrant color in the monochrome gray dawn. In the mid-ground, a solitary figure in a high-visibility orange vest walks away from the camera, their boots splashing softly in a shallow puddle that reflects the dull light of a distant streetlamp. The air is thick with the damp chill of the Atlantic, visible as a faint haze rising from the dark, oily water.
