Falcon Sellers in Souq Waqif Doha

Midsummer sunlight falls through low-hanging gray clouds, softening the shadows across a narrow Souq Waqif lane in Doha. Stone walls line the crowded walkway where falcon sellers stand beside their perches. Men in white dishdashas and red-checkered ghutras hold leather-clad birds, the hawks resting calmly on their gloved hands. The warm tones of woven mats and wooden cages contrast with the cool, diffuse light from above. Shoppers in colorful thobes move through the tight space, their faces turned toward the birds. Dust motes hang in the air above the stone pavement. A hawk's yellow talon grips the rough leather of its handler's glove.
