Entomologist Pins Specimens in Haiphong Drawer

by Carmen Gilliam

Deep shadows swallow the room while a sharp rim of evening light cuts across the edge of a wooden drawer. Inside, rows of pinned insect specimens sit in neat, dark rows against the soft gray felt lining. The entomologist's hands move with precision, a slender pin held between fingers, positioning a beetle wing against the foam. Outside the frame, the monsoon season presses in, suggested by the slight tilt of the drawer and the dust motes caught in the thin beam of light. Salt wind seems to ripple the edge of a nearby map, though the air itself remains still. The focus rests on the delicate texture of the beetle's elytra, catching the faint glow against the dark wood grain.
