Enamel Bowls in Bangkok

by Eric Lamb

First light after rain softens the neon glare on a Bangkok street corner where a vendor adjusts a stack of glossy enamel bowls, their wet surfaces reflecting the pink dawn sky. A clothespin jar sits precariously on the edge of a plastic table, holding receipts and a single peony stem that has been plucked from a nearby temple offering, its petals damp and heavy with water. The vendor’s hand, stained with turmeric, reaches for a towel draped over a rail, wiping condensation from the rim of a pot. Steam rises gently from a nearby noodle station, mixing with the cool, grey mist of the early morning.
